Comparative assessment of airborne pollutants and health risks in cattle markets of okigwe and Lokpa, southeastern Nigeria

Abstract: Cattle markets are potential hotspots for air pollution due to high concentrations of livestock, organic waste, and human activities. In Southeastern Nigeria, the Okigwe and Lokpa cattle markets serve as major trading hubs. This study conducted a comparative assessment of airborne pollutants and evaluated potential health risks in the cattle markets of Okigwe and Lokpa, Southeastern Nigeria. Ambient air samples were collected from both markets and analyzed for concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and airborne microbial load (bacteria and fungi). Standardized gas detection instruments and settle plate techniques were employed. Lokpa market exhibited significantly higher concentrations of CO (124.04 ppm), H₂S (0.55 ppm) compared to Okigwe (CO: 112 ppm; H₂S: 0.9 ppm). Airborne microbial counts were also elevated in both markets, with higher fungal and bacterial loads in Lokpa than in Okigwe. The findings reveal suboptimal air quality in both markets, with Lokpa presenting higher environmental and occupational health risks. Interventions such as improved waste management, ventilation, and regular air monitoring are recommended to mitigate exposure and protect public health.
