Author(s): Abdulqader Yahya Hamad

Abstract: Background: The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by
coronaviruses, which are one of the virus families that cause a group of
diseases in humans and animals, such as the common cold and severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS), primarily affecting the respiratory system across
different age groups. According to statistics from the World Health
Organization (WHO), there were more than 764,474,387 infections and over
6,915,586 deaths by March 2023.  Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the health
awareness of both sexes in secondary schools in Baqubah city regarding their
awareness levels about coronavirus disease. This follows a series of programs
and seminars held in schools in cooperation between the Ministry of Education
and the Ministry of Health to spread health awareness about the methods of
transmission of the disease and ways to prevent it, as Diyala province was
exposed to an epidemic wave of coronavirus disease.  Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in Baqubah city from
November to January 2025. This study included 500 students of both sexes from
secondary school, aged 13 to 18 years, with 50% of the students from urban
areas and 50% from rural areas. A special questionnaire was constructed for
this study, which included 8 multiple-choice questions covering all information
about COVID-19. Statistical analysis of the data collected throughout the study
was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)
version 27, and the Chi-Square test was used to differentiate between groups. A
p-value of less than 0.05 was regarded as significant. Results: The results generally showed that health awareness
among both sexes of students concerning coronavirus disease was very good.
Students correctly answered 7 out of a total of 8 questions, with a significant
difference (P< 0.05). Conclusion: The health awareness among secondary students
concerning COVID-19 in Diyala province was very good. The study also showed
that there was no significant difference in health awareness between students
residing in urban and rural areas. Additionally, there was no significant
difference in health awareness between males and females.
