Eco-friendly approaches to managing Parthenium hysterophorus using mycoherbicides
Author(s): Sanghmitra
Abstract: Parthenium hysterophorus, commonly known as congress grass, poses a major ecological and agricultural threat worldwide. Traditional management strategies such as chemical herbicides and mechanical removal are often ineffective or harmful to the environment. Eco-friendly management, especially biological control using fungal agents, has emerged as a promising alternative. In present study total twenty fungal species isolated from parthenium were tested against Parthenium seed germination in laboratory conditions. Out of all the isolated species, culture filtrate of Bipolaris tetramera and Fusarium moniliforme were found to be most effective in inhibiting the seed germination whereas least inhibition was recorded in filtrate of Mucor racemosus. Culture filtrate of Bipolaris tetramera and Fusarium moniliforme exhibited 100% and 94.82% germination inhibition within 7 days and 15 days respectively.
